The Musk-Trump Meltdown: How a Multi Billion-Dollar Bromance Went Bust
Picture this: two titans of ego, once joined at the hip like reality TV stars vying for the same crown, now clawing at each other’s throats in a public spat so vicious it makes a cage match look like a tea party.

The fallout between Donald Trump and Elon Musk, a bromance that once lit up the MAGA skies like a SpaceX rocket, has crashed harder than a Tesla on autopilot veering into a ditch.
What began as a disagreement over a bloated spending bill has spiraled into a nuclear-grade feud, complete with social media haymakers, stock market carnage, and late-night comedians cackling like hyenas over the wreckage.
So cue Metallica's 'Master of Puppets" (no particular reference to a certain puppet master) and dive into how this deliciously toxic breakup came about.

It all started with Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” a tax-and-spending monstrosity that Musk, in a fit of fiscal piety, dubbed a “disgusting abomination” on X.
Never one to take a slight lying down, Trump fired back, sneering that Musk had “Trump derangement syndrome” and was just sore about losing electric vehicle tax credits.
Musk, not to be outdone, escalated the brawl with a post that hit below the belt: “Without me, Trump would have lost the election... such ingratitude.” Oh, the audacity! The world’s richest man claiming he single-handedly crowned the orange king. Trump, predictably, wasn’t having it, retorting, “I’d rather Elon criticize me than the bill.”
By Thursday, the gloves were off.
Trump, in a move straight out of his Art of the Deal playbook, threatened to gut Musk’s government contracts, including those juicy SpaceX deals that keep astronauts orbiting and Musk’s bank account bloated.
“The easiest way to save money in our Budget,” Trump crowed, as if slashing billions in federal support was just another Tuesday. Musk, ever the drama queen, clapped back with a post that could’ve been scripted by a soap opera writer: “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” Oof. Accusing the President of the United States of being tangled in Jeffrey Epstein’s web? That’s not a post; that’s a Molotov cocktail.
The fallout was immediate and brutal.
Tesla’s stock plummeted 14%, wiping some US$152 billion off its market cap faster than you can say “self-driving snafu.” Musk’s net worth took a US$34 billion hit, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, proving that even billionaires bleed when they pick a fight with the wrong ego. Dogecoin, that meme coin Musk loves to pump, also tanked, because apparently even crypto isn’t safe from this soap opera. Meanwhile, Trump’s own Truth Social and its associated TrumpCoin lost over US$100 million in value, because nothing says “stable genius” like tanking your own platform in a social media tantrum.

Late-night hosts, those vultures of schadenfreude, swooped in to feast on the carnage.
Jimmy Fallon, with his trademark grin, quipped, “Their relationship went off a cliff faster than a self-driving Tesla,” a line so sharp it could cut through Musk’s Cybertruck armor. Stephen Colbert noted the irony of Trump, a proud Tesla owner, now despising its creator: “Trump’s gonna have to get one of those bumper stickers for his Tesla that says, ‘I bought this before Elon told everyone I was on Epstein’s plane’”. Seth Meyers called it a “male friendship destroyed,” lamenting, “This is why men are so lonely,” while Michael Kosta on The Daily Show dubbed it “World War Douche,” a moniker so apt it deserves its own Wikipedia page.
But let’s add some layers to this dumpster fire. The feud didn’t erupt in a vacuum.
Musk, who spent 130 days as a “special government employee” at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), was already on thin ice. His tenure ended with a golden key to the White House and Trump’s praise as “one of the greatest business leaders and innovators”. Yet, whispers of discontent were brewing. Musk’s criticism of the spending bill wasn’t just about EV credits; it was a power play. He’d poured hundreds of millions into Trump’s campaign, expecting to be the puppet master, not the puppet.

Trump, meanwhile, wasn’t playing nice.
His threats to cut SpaceX contracts weren’t idle; Musk’s companies stand to loose nearly US$100 billion in sales. Government support is expected to have raked in at least US$48 billion (read The Washington Post story linked above) and another US$48 billion over roughly the next decade, if Trump and his administraton eventually do decide to remotely disable (pun intended) the breaks.
Threatening to pull that plug was like threatening to unplug Musk’s life support. Musk’s response? A fleeting threat to decommission the Dragon spacecraft, before backtracking: “Good advice. Ok, we won’t decommission Dragon.” Untreated childhood trauma does have its consequences.
The public wasn’t kind either. One suggested the feud was “foretold” by a Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside Trump’s Las Vegas hotel.
Ashley St. Clair, author of the insightful "Elephants Are Not Birds" and a half claimant to one of Musk’s 14 known progeny, jumped in with a snarky, “Hey @realDonaldTrump lmk if u need any breakup advice.” Heaven hath no fury like a woman scorned. It is indeed a struggle to get by with US$500,000 in annual child support, especially when inflation is only set to increase with tariffs. Musk should have really upped the US$15 million, plus US$100,000 a month in support offer. Those Ku Klux Klan groupies don't come cheap.
Even Kanye West took time off from cheap thrills and parading wife Bianca Censori in increasingly diminishing outfits to weigh in. “Broooos please noooooo 🫂 We love you both so much.” West said on his verified Twitter, oops X, profile.
What’s a billionaire brawl without a cameo from Ye?

What’s next for this soap opera? A White House aide hinted at a truce call, but Trump denied it, saying, “You mean the man who has lost his mind?”. Tesla’s stock recouped 3.7% on Friday though it was still down some 15% for the week, according to LSEG Data & Analytics. Bloomberg estimates the Cybertruck maker has lost some US$380 billion in market value in 2025 alone.
Musk’s political misadventure has cost him dearly, alienating Trump’s base while failing to secure his influence. Trump risks losing tech donors and younger voters who flocked to Musk’s “Dark MAGA” vibe. More importantly, Musk's sweet deals with foreign governments will now likely get stalled as previously hamstrung officials percieve him as a persona non grata in the Trump administration.
It’s a tragedy wrapped in a farce, with Tesla shareholders and American astronauts caught in the crossfire. This breakup is messier than a Cybertruck in a mudslide, and we’re all just along for the ride.
